Russia and India celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Friendship and Financing Treaty
These days Russia and India are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Governance (signed on January 28, 1993). Indian political scientist, Honorary Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi Nandan Unnikrishnan in conversation with TASS found that the document continues to play an important role in the “changing world”.
He added that it is a treaty to reflect the views of India and Russia on bilateral relations.
“Neither in India nor in Russia will they do anything that would harm the serious interests of a partner. And this is very important in today’s problematic and changing world.”the expert said.
Nandan Unnikrishnan mentioned that the Treaty of 1993 is fully in line with the interests of New Delhi and Moscow to this day. According to the expert, India and Russia consider it further, in the foreseeable future, there is no reason to abandon the Treaty.
The Indian political scientist said that the signing of this document was an important step. It replaced the Treaty of Friendship and Exodus between Moscow and New Delhi of 1971. The previous agreement expired, since one of the parties actually ceased to exist (we are talking about the USSR). The new document made it possible to continue the development of bilateral relations in the economic, humanitarian and other fields.
Recall that on the eve of the Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar stated that India and Russia built strong relationshipsthat have stood the test of time. He noted that since gaining independence, his country’s RF has remained a reliable and faithful device. Russia and its leaders have always highly valued India and its people, realized its potential even in the excitement of the development of bilateral relations, and natural mutually beneficial ties were maintained at meetings.
