Speed measurement at Tomkova náměstí: the record holder drove almost eighty. In his twenties
A pedestrian has just crossed the crosswalk in Provazníková Street in Brno. As soon as he stepped onto the pavement, the driver of a car took off behind his heels as if in a racing sprint. He drove from the Husowické tunnel towards the current temporary bridge over the Svitava river. The situation from Tuesday afternoon demonstrates the behavior of many drivers who ignore the current traffic restrictions near Tomkova náměstí. Workers are working on site.

Cars drive there in two lanes in both directions. Filip Poňuchálek, spokesman for the Brno municipality, confirmed that the drivers are crossing the border. “So far, the police have notified us of roughly seven hundred violations,” he calculated.
About seventy percent of drivers exceeded the speed between ten and twenty kilometers per hour, another twenty-four percent were between twenty and thirty kilometers per hour, and five percent of drivers exceeded the speed over thirty kilometers per hour. “The highest value was seventy-six kilometers per hour,” added Deník Poňuchálek. The officials will process the notification in the following period and distribute any fines. The collected money will then go to the mobility fund. “The magistrate did not have to hire a new employee because of this matter,” the spokesman assured.
The representatives of Brno proceeded to measure the speed based on suggestions from residents of Brno-North, who complained about excessive noise. According to the Directorate of Roads and Highways, fast-moving cars were destroying the bridge structure. If repaired, traffic would have to return to one lane in each direction. “However, the situation has already fundamentally improved. From my point of view, the measure served its purpose. Since then, we have not registered any further complaints at the town hall,” said the mayor of Brno-sever, Martin Maleček. According to him, the vibrations were mainly created by fast moving heavy cars.

The temporary bridging is part of the construction of part of the large urban ring road Tomkovo náměstí and Rokytova. City officials expect that the section measurement will be functional for as long as the traffic on the bridge is temporary. They expect that until at least the summer.
For example, Ondřej Balcárek sometimes drives over the bridge. Although admittedly not on his usual route. “I keep the speed. I don’t want to get a photo in the mailbox,” he is clear. The new part of the large urban ring road Tomkovo náměstí and Rokytova is to be completed in 2024.
