The second UNESCO monument in Brno? They want to write Mendel’s greenhouse alongside Einstein
/VIDEO/ The Augustinians of Staro Brno will apply to have Mendel’s greenhouse on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The effort to register the building in the grounds of the abbey in Staré Brno on the list of the United Nations has support from the city and the region. Both the city and the region are interested in financially supporting the registration of the recently restored Mendel greenhouse. But he doesn’t know if they will have the money for it. The process itself will cost three million crowns a year. At the same time, inclusion among the world’s most important monuments is a long shot.
The inclusion of Mendel’s greenhouse on the UNESCO list is supported by Brno and the South Moravian Region.

“Cooperation with the city and the region is needed in the area of greenhouse registration. The more processes the city and region support, the faster it will be. We welcome the idea, we just have to evaluate and find out what the real chances of success are and in the end we are able to help as a city and region. It is not only about time, but also a relatively large part of money. The people who will be in charge of this project must be paid. There are a number of reports and documents that need to be submitted, and overall it is very expensive,” said South Moravian Governor Jan Grolich.

Although the city and the region first want to evaluate how the registration of Mendel’s greenhouse among UNESCO monuments has any hope of success, they believe that the registration process itself could attract tourists to Brno and the South Moravian Region.
According to Jakub Carda from the public benefit company Společné, which is dedicated to promoting the life and work of Johann Gregor Mendel, the project should be successful. He compares Mendel’s greenhouse to the laboratory where Marie Curie-Skłodowska discovered radioactivity or where Albert Einstein wrote his seminal work Theory of Relativity.

“Genetics, which is one of the ten most important scientific fields today, was discovered at this place. It is a place where science and faith worked together in the nineteenth century, which was not so common at that time. We have preserved places where Mendel went and worked. And it is one of the most important places of science in the world. These are places that are very important, and thanks to the monastery grounds, we are also able to point out other heritages,” said Carda.
