Croatia introduces partial closing of shops on Sundays
Zagreb – Among the exceptions are petrol stations and shops operating in the area of hospitals, airports, bus and railway stations.
According to the Croatian Prime Minister, the acceptance of the cabinet’s proposal will enable mainly those working in shops to spend Sundays with their families.
On Thursday, the Croatian decided on the partial closing of shops on Sundays, Marin Piletic announced at the press conference following the cabinet meeting.
According to the proposed amendment to the law, with a few exceptions
they are allowed to be open on Sundays for a maximum of seven weeks, and the basic salary is increased by 50 on Sundays or public holidays.
Among the exceptions, the draft legislation mentions petrol stations, as well as shops operating in the area of hospitals, airports, bus and railway stations. Shops and bakeries can be open on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic also publicly told the press of the government meeting: the acceptance of the cabinet will enable mainly those working in shops to spend Sundays with their families.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposed model is the same as the model introduced by several other countries, but it is tailored to Croatia, because the country is extremely dependent on tourism.
With this, Sundays should be made his day, thus strengthening the family as the core of society, and with 16 working days in the season and in big cities, it is possible for the shops to decide their work schedule themselves, said Plenkovic.
“If someone works on Sunday, the employer must pay accordingly. By amending the labor law, Sunday work will become 50 percent more expensive than on weekdays,” added the prime minister at the end.
