Debrecen – The city’s sports history custodians paid tribute to the memory of Alfréd Hajós and Győző Veres.
145 years ago Alfréd Hajós was born on this day (February 1), Olympic champion in the 100 and 1200 meter freestyle swimming at the 1896 Athens Olympics. The design of the Aranybika Hotel, the street named after him, the swimming competition and the prize are also connected to Debrecen.
12 years ago Olympic bronze medal weightlifter Győző Veres, who was a student at the Debrecen Reformed College, died on this day. The excellent sportsman started his sports career in the Debrecen Honvéd Sports Association.
The task of the Hajdú-Bihar County Sports Historian Society, whose legal successor is the Debrecen Honvéd Sports and Student Sports Association Békessy Békessy Olympic Friendship Circle Section, is to nurture the Olympic ideal and traditions, especially researching Olympians connected to Debrecen and the catchment area, and drawing exhibitions. and giving lectures. The biographies of more than twenty Olympians were submitted to the Debrecen Valuables. The traveling exhibition presenting the Olympians connected to the Hajdú-Bihar county was prepared, which was shown in the public education institutions and cultural centers of the county. The department operates within the framework of the Hungarian Olympic Academy.
The goal of the department is to convey value, preserve tradition and place the memory of our excellent athletes in a worthy place.
