An unusual phenomenon in Brno! The trees bloom there a month before Christmas
While it’s really cold in the rest of the country, it looks like spring is here in Brno. For the residents of South Moravian Ivančice, trees bloom in front of their houses a month before Christmas.
An unprecedented phenomenon awaited the residents of the town of Ivančice. On the housing estate in the city, which is located in the Brno-venkov district, the trees bloomed thanks to the frosty days. Although the local residents were surprised by the flowers, the expert has a logical explanation for this.
According to expert Tomáš Vencálek, curator of trees from the Botanical Garden m of Prague, it could be a hairy cherry. People often confuse this species with sakura. However, the hairy cherry is typical precisely because of its early flowering.
“If the cold period is replaced by a warm period from the end of autumn, it can practically bloom at any time from November to March, until it starts to freeze again. If the whole winter is frosty, it usually blooms from March to April,” explained Vencálek.
Similar to the hairy cherry, other trees can also surprise you. According to the expert, the Brno phenomenon is not so curious after all. At this time of the year, for example, the Virginian elm also blooms, or later in February, the soft elm. According to Vencálek, early flowering shrubs include, for example, fragrant viburnum or jasmine in full bloom.
