Republic of Moldova – the need for wisdom and firmness
Financial aid was announced – 250 million euros, to which tens of millions more will be added from some EU member countries, for crossing the winter. No less important is moral and political support.
“Moldova is part of the European families, and when it dies hard, the family is a row” – the message brought by the European dignitaries was met with satisfaction by the Moldovans. But not by all. A pro-Russian election boycotted Roberta Metsola’s speech in the Chisinau parliament, unable to overcome its condition as a “sounding box” of the Kremlin.
If the government implements inclusive policy for all categories of the population, speaks of the need for unity and national solidarity, the pro-Russians stay away. If the gas does not come from Putin, the gas is not good for them. If Moldova receives electricity from Romania, that electricity is not good, although it also supplies the homes of the pro-Russian deputies, and their villas, and their gyms, and their children’s schools.
A communist-socialist position refuses to dialogue with European dignitaries, displays coldness towards the West. Why? He probably does not allow Moscow, which is concerned with making itself do the exact opposite of pro-European, to spread mistrust and panic in Moldovan society.
The hacking of the private Telegram accounts of several official people from the Republic of Moldova, including President Maia Sandu and some important government ministers – suggests Alexandru Musteață, director of the SIS – would be the operation of Russian special services.
Fragments of discussions held by state officials, illegally extracted from their private correspondence, appeared on the Internet. Phrases, lines, comments falsified or taken out of context, claim the affected dignitaries, and expressions that sound more informal, more direct, more “shortcut”. Colloquial, emotional language, “off the record” expressions. This is how all people talk, even politicians, in their inner circle.
What is more important in this case: the content, the style of these discussions or the crime of hacking private accounts? We have a violation of personal privacy, for which there must be articles in the Criminal Code. And even more serious: we have an attack on national security, targeting persons with responsibility in the state, in the context of a nearby war, which affects the Republic of Moldova, an attack that cannot be tolerated, left without consequences.
Once the “leaks” scandal broke, an experience criticized the rulers for not using encrypted, high-security communication lines. They were accused of being naive, of resorting to a Russian-controlled, Russian-run, farm network, Telegram. They should have taken the danger of cyber attacks seriously and be careful what they talk about, use.
Experts have expressed hope that a serious investigation by the General Prosecutor’s Office will follow to establish the identity of the perpetrators, especially since the director of the SIS anticipates other “leaks” with “kompromat” value. Blackmail, hits below the belt, mob procedurals, hybrid warfare. Should criminals be made fun of, threatened with prison?
It is difficult to estimate the political costs of this scandal for the government in Chisinau. A pro-Russian position points the finger at the “screenshots” that appeared on the net, accuses an alleged falsification of the competition after which Veronica Dragălin was elected head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, they demand her resignation and the resignation of the Minister of Justice.
At the meeting on Sunday evening, November 13, from the presidency, we understand from the relations of some PAS parliamentarians, it was discussed about the imminence of changes in the ministries where performance is lagging. The stake of the reform in Justice is huge.
“Brotherhood for theft and war”, as he told the oligarchic, pro-Russian party, wants to stop the reform, to bog it down in a political-legal end, doubled with street pressure. The resignation of the Minister of Justice or the head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office would be a great gift for them, a record victory, it would blow their ass.
PAS needs revitalization, re-validation through certain government reshuffles, keeping the basic people, who need the weight of change.
A consultation process with civil society, with experienced specialists in various fields, with other pro-European parties, to identify the most suitable people and solutions to bring more efficiency and vision to the act of governance would be good.
The power needs to show more openness, to remove the feeling of exclusivity and omniscience, which has produced enough nervousness so far. The comfortable majority it has in parliament forces it to more wisdom and more responsibility. The national destiny and in the hands of these governments, it cannot be left at the mercy of Shor, Platon, Plahotniuc and their protectors in Moscow.
Yesterday, November 15, the massive attack with Russian missiles left electricity for several hours over several localities in the Republic of Moldova. One or two rockets fell on the territory of Poland, a NATO member state, killing two people. The incident is under investigation, no one wants an escalation of the conflict, but it is very clear that in the Republic of Moldova, much more firm is needed. The absolute priority is ensuring national security, on all “fronts”, internal and external.
