Arnold Karskens of Ongehoord Nederland in Op1: ‘No clown’
Ongehoord Nederland (ON) of chairman Arnold Karskens is again under fire because the broadcaster is ‘not sufficiently prepared to cooperate within the public order’. A second financial sanction is in the air, while a first of 93,000 euros will be dealt with in a hearing by the complaints committee of the NPO on Friday. Talk show On 1 therefore invite Arnold Karskens equally. He joined Hakan Külcü, ON lawyer.
The reason for the second sanction is also the broadcast of Unheard of News from 15 Sept. Meanwhile, people of color became like “Negro.” Unheard of News is always moderately viewed live, but much discussed by YouTube and social media. Peter Kuipers, director of KRO-NCRV, then indicated that he thought that Ongehoord Nederland would immediately disappear from the television.
Arnold Karskens about the allegation Unheard of the Netherlands
What does Arnold Karskens actually think that he would be insufficiently prepared to cooperate, Op1 presenter Giovanca Ostania wanted to know in part. The chairman: “Today we sent a view to the NPO, in which we simply undermine that. We are always willing to work together with the NPO and all fellow broadcasters. You can’t find anywhere that we don’t. It is correct to exchange it. It is precisely about the other broadcasters, including the EO. All member broadcasters concluded that they would sit together in various consultations. Bert Huisjes from WNL calls me a clown with a circular saw and wants us to be thrown off the net.”
Arnold Karskens feels anything but a clown with a circular saw. The view he spoke of has 39 pages and is on the website of Ongehoord Nederland. Lawyer Külcü states that the board of the NPO is not authorized to impose the two sanctions at all. “It’s an interesting question why a board thinks it can do something that the law won’t reveal to them.”
The NPO wants to attack Ongehoord Nederland again. Partly because in a broadcast of Ongehoord Nieuws people of color were excluded as ‘Negro’. Lawyer for broadcaster Hakan Külcü: “They are images accompanying an idea that you want to transfer.” #On 1 pic.twitter.com/4BkAvePNrF

Lawyer: ‘Negro was normal ten years ago’
Tijs van den Brink, fellow presenter of Op1, discussed the broadcast of September 15. “There people of color became, I say it once, as a Negro assumption. Was that agreed in advance? Arnold Karskens: „We leave the presentation free of they call someone black, or negro. I have travelled a lot. Whether you go to Africa or the United States, no word is forbidden, nigger. You can use that.” Van den Brink: “For many people it is hurtful.” Lawyer Külcü: “I hear that the word is loaded. This is the point of interest. I think they should have lit it better around it.” Van den Brink: “What exactly do you mean by that?” Külcü: “To use the word negro in this context , While one should have said: ‘Nowadays that has become a loaded term’. That was less loaded ten years ago than it is now. When we still had nigger kisses in the supermarket, you name it. All very normal.”
So it should have been done differently, concluded Van den Brink. The weather lawyer: “Well, there has been a change in meaning, in the connotation that word has acquired. What one wants to remove from ON is that the charge it has received is drawn back more towards neutral. To also add: “Men could have touched on that.” Tijs van den Brink: “Can or must? Because a lot of people are hurt to a limited extent.” Külcü: „In the sense of ‘legally, we have freedom of expression here. And that is within limits. Within ON we think that should remain very broad.”
The interview with Arnold Karskens has received a lot of reactions on social media, both ‘for’ and ‘against’. While some think that Ongehoord Nederland brought a bad story, others think that the ON duo is too difficult to compare and were always interrupted.
