Usually this name is associated with the creation of the III Department of the Imperial Majesty’s Own Chancellery. However, it preceded the Patriotic War of 1812, in which General Benckendorff was one of the first partisan commanders and the first commandant of liberated Moscow. In 1813-1814, he distinguished himself in Estonia, took Breda and Amsterdam, and received golden weapons three times. From 1826 to 1844, Benckendorff was the head of the III Department of the Chancellery.
The exhibition “Another Empire” is familiar to visitors with exceptional and much less known facts of life from a Russian military leader. There are documents and documents from the Russian State Historical Archive, which provide an opportunity to learn about the real life story of Benckendorff.
