Other domestic participants in the final also excelled, Demeter beat Csaba Bőhm in the last meters, thus the sixth and seventh places went to the Hungarians.
In the team, behind the Hungarians, the French and the Czechs finished in second and third place, respectively.
The field of 59 people fought in two groups in the qualifiers on Thursday, from which 36 competitors, including one of six domestic starters – using the maximum number allowed by the rules – four advanced. From Saturday’s two semi-final groups of 18 each, the first seven places went to the automatic finals, while another four top fives made it to the finals based on actuality. All four Hungarian semi-finalists remained in the final.
The competition already completed the round-robin on Friday, and the contestants brought the results with them to the finals.
Bereczki started Sunday’s fight from the fourth place, his 22 victories in vívópást, which were accompanied by 13 defeats. The two-time European bronze medalist Demeter finished with 21/14 on Friday, and was fifth at the start on Sunday. Böhm and Szép, who won an individual bronze medal at the World Championships in July, had the same 19 wins and 16 losses during the all-around, which placed them in 12th place.
A quarter of an hour before the ride, a thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds hit the Regional Athletic Center in Bregyó, but in the end this did not disturb the competition, because after a few minutes the sun was shining brightly. Three of the Hungarians – Bereczki, Demeter and Szép – completed the ten-obstacle course flawlessly, while Bőhm made a mistake on one, so he finished with 293 points instead of 300.
The Hungarians were unable to score extra points on the elevated track a few meters away, and after the bonus round, the field went to the nearby swimming pool, where they had to overcome the 200-meter distance. Among the Hungarians, Bőhm was the fastest, achieving the second time with 2:05.34 minutes. Bereczki (2:05.80) was third, Demeter (2:07.54) fourth, Szép (2:10.41) sixth in swimming.
He returned to the field at the central location for the combined number. Bereczki started the 5x600m race, which was interrupted by four shootings, from the front, followed by Demeter, while Bőhm started seventh and Szép ninth, the latter’s disadvantage was 24 seconds against the leader. Bereczki raced steadily throughout, coming out of the standings first after all his shots and finishing in the lead with a large lead. He was followed by Szép, who was already third after the third series, and second in the fourth, and finally finished in this position as well. Demeter was pushed back a bit, and Bőhm stepped forward, and in the end they fought each other at the finish line.
Szép was the fastest in the combined event with a time of 9:58.96 minutes. Bereczki (10:10.30) was fourth, Bőhm (10:12.93) was sixth, and Demeter (10:24.67) was tenth.
“The team won easily, we took the two places individually, you can’t ask for more than a first place. All four Hungarian competitors were in the first week,” said János federal trapper in the MTI-MTI. – Bereczki shot well and ran well, so he was able to keep the advantage, and Balázs Szép started from the back and won the silver medal with a very good combined number. I’m happy, the Hungarian quintet shines in its old glory,” he added tearfully.
“I was confident in my run, and as it turns out that I shoot well, I became more and more confident – evaluated Bereczki. – The last round was an experience run with the encouragement of the audience. Thanks to everyone who prepared for my preparation. After the presentation failed, Europe did everything for this – championship, I pushed hard for this one month” – he refers to the fact that he finished 13th in the main competition in Alexandria in July of that year, thus missing out on the Hungarian team that won the silver medal at the time.
“I fought well, while at the World Championships I finished with a plus one, here with a plus three,” declared Szép. the race is decided in the last 150 meters, I have to do it. Overall, I had a very good year.”
Earlier in the day, the team composed of Michelle Gulyás, Simon Sarolta, and Luca Barta came second in the women’s competition. Gulyás finished third, Simon sixth, Barta tenth, and Blanka Guzi 11th.
