Davis Cup: With the victory of Fucsovics, our national team advanced
Vilnius – The Ukrainians won the doubles, but in the fight between the two top players, the Hungarian tennis player was better.
Fábián Marozsán and Péter Fajta lost their doubles match, so the Hungarian tennis team leads only 2-1 against the Ukrainians in Vilnius on the final day of the Davis Cup classification on Friday.
The Hungarians could expect to continue with a 2-0 advantage, as Fucsovics easily beat Márton Bielinszki and Zsombor Piros Orlov in Thursday’s singles.
The captain of the opponent, the 1999 Roland Garros finalist Andriy Medvedev, sent Beloborodko and Manafov to the field for the doubles match, according to the previews. However, the Hungarian head coach Zoltán Nagy changed the order and nominated Péter Fajta instead of Fucsovics, the twenty-year-old player became the 46th tennis player in Hungarian DK history.
In the opening match – about a hundred people watched in the SEB Arena on Friday – the Hungarian duo took the Ukrainians’ serve at 2:1, they immediately broke back on Fajta’s serve and equalized at 3:3. From there, going head-to-head, they reached the shortening, in which the Fajtás did more damage, and after 58 minutes they fell behind by a set.
In the continuation, more stable serving booms followed, until at 4:5 Marozsán’s serve made the score forty-none, and the third of the three match points had already been hit by the opponent. The clash lasted 1 hour and 37 minutes.
In the continuation, Márton Fucsovics won the third singles match of the duel, so the Hungarian tennis team defeated the Ukrainians 3-1 in the Davis Cup classification in Vilnius.
The team of national team captain Zoltán Nagy continued the match with a 2-1 lead after the lost doubles, in which Fucsovics, ranked 91st in the world, clashed with Beloborodko, ranked 747th. The Hungarian top player started with 4:0 and, hitting confidently, took the opening set in 31 minutes. In the continuation, the rival took a surprise 3:1 lead, but this was followed by a Hungarian heron in a series, and then the thirty-year-old athlete from Nyíregyháza won the match for the second time and won 6:2, 7:5.
The remaining singles without stakes were no longer played based on the agreement of the two captains.
Zoltán Nagy is the first to talk about how he changed the doubles team, aware of the 2-0 lead.
“The advantage was reassuring, and that’s why the young people gained confidence. It was a close match, but in doubles, otherwise, it often only wins a few points in the match. The boys held their ground well, but there were still small shortcomings. Then the original line-up remained at 2-1, Marci played and in the end won easily,” he explained.
The head coach said that before the match, the Hungarians were the favorites, and he was proud of his team, which lived up to expectations.
“We have to win one more match in order to be in the DK finals again next year after last year. In the longer term, a good core needs to be formed, and if the guys have developed like this, I am confident that we can be among the best again,” he added.
The national team played a qualifier in Sydney in March, and after a 2-1 lead, they lost to the Australians 3-2, who thus qualified for the group stage of the DK final.
