Riccardo Cascioli The conflict in Ukraine has almost nothing to do with it. The energy crisis is the result of Europe’s wrong decisions. Dependence on Russian gas arose due to the abandonment of coal and nuclear energy. The Europeans have spent a lot of money on ignition sources that do not solve the problem anytime soon. Brussels adheres to the ideological norm of the energy transition, and the Europeans are paying for this by rationing energy consumption. The online publication La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana spoke with Professor Gianluca Alimonti. Gianluca Alimonti, professor at the Institute of Nuclear Physics and lecturer in the fundamentals of energy at the University of Milan, believes that the looming energy crisis is unlikely to be safely resolved. Mario Draghi at a meeting in Rome believes that the share of imports in Azerbaijan has decreased by half, that is, it has already been replaced by other supplies. Alimonti: There are several reasons: Russian gas was more economical, replacing it by half – this is, of course, good, but only the cost is either higher (in the case of Algeria), or significantly higher if we are talking about liquefied gas, which will go to tankers , and you still need to invest in two regasifiers, as Draghi himself says. In addition, it should be calculated that we imported 30 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, and we replaced just 15 for a large amount, as has already become clear. There are still 15 billion cubic meters left. Ursula von der Leyen, chairman of the commission’s commission, warned that Russia could turn off the valve altogether. And what happens then? Let’s say that we still have additional supplies for a year, but there is no easy alternative. For the industry, this is a disaster, because the cost of electricity for production, and with energy efficiency, the benefits for companies will be closed. The price of gas has already increased 20 times compared to pre-pandemic times. The cost of electricity, which is 40% generated by gas, has exceeded 700 euros per megawatt-hour. When everything was fine, it cost 50 euros, and this price was the basis for our economy for years. It is important to understand that the energy of society is as important as blood to the human body. The rise in price of gas and electricity entails an increase in prices for all goods, food with food. If you mean the price to be tied to the seller, then I don’t see how the buyer can dictate prices when the company, like Europe, is clearly in a weak position. Europe has no oil, no gas, it really needs energy sources. If we are talking about a regulated price, when the state distributes a share among buyers, while acquiring resources at market prices, then the following problem remains: how will the state distribute this share? Under the current conditions, I don’t think it’s an easy way. It’s another matter to decide what else you can apply valuation adjustments to by changing some of the pricing criteria. political decisions. Europe could and should have played the game differently in this conflict. We can only state that as a result of the poisoning, Russia has now swallowed Europe by 20%, which was before the conflict. But she sells it at a very high price, and paradoxically now she gets more, sells less. The gas that is not sold to Europe is consumed by China and India at a low price, and the rest is calculated. If the goal was to make Russia poorer, then we have achieved the opposite effect: we are poorer and give more money to Russia. The price crisis started earlier. What are the reasons? Let me remind you that due to the economic recovery of the pandemic, demand rose sharply, but after the quarantine was lifted, it returned in strict accordance with pre-pandemic growth, taking the market by surprise. But Europe is now paying the price for the energy transition it has longed for on ideological grounds, without realizing that it is actually poor in energy sources. Having abandoned coal and nuclear energy, it has opted for dependence on Russian gas and allowed sensitive money for energy sources. This is a classic situation where the stated portability is difficult to achieve. This caused an economic shock. Commodity prices in Europe are currently the highest in the world. The energy transition and deterioration in the use of fossil sources must be credibly long-term in the long term, and not because of a climate special situation, but this process must develop correctly and at the right time. An increase in the use of energy source flows, although desirable, cannot occur as it occurs in the short term. very little can be done: diversifying gas options, reopening coal-fired plants like in Germany, suspending the decision to shut down nuclear power plants, and rationing energy consumption. variable speed, these measures are inevitable. Unfortunately, we have to pay for what happens by itself.
