The best of the slag world in Debrecen: we asked the pilots of Debrecen what they expect from the race
After the European Championship competition in May, the series will continue, hosting a world competition in the city of Cívis again on Pentecost Monday, June 6 from 4 pm: SpeedWolf Debrecen will host the most prestigious competition of the season at the Pál Perényi Slag Motor Stadium.
It took nine years for the audience in Hajdúság to see a slag-powered world championship fight again, so interest in the fight increased.
In the SGP qualifier, 16 iron slippers from 11 countries – Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, France, Germany, Slovenia, Romania, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Hungary – are struggling to advance, with just four places. The stakes are huge, as anyone who successfully takes the Debrecen hurdle to take the first step to fight for the individual World Championship title in the 2023 Grand Prix Series.
It can be enveloped in advance that there will be a huge struggle in the civic oval, considered by foreign competitors to be one of the fastest tracks in the region.
Honest standing
According to the original announcement, Hungary would have been represented by a single competitor, but there was a change in the start list on Thursday. The International Motorsports Federation (FIM) has informed the organizers that the named Ukrainian driver will not take part in the race. Hajdú Online found out
The reason for Vitalii Lysak’s absence is that the Ukrainian authorities have not given permission for the slag to leave the country so he cannot cross the Ukrainian border.
Lysak is finally represented by a Hungarian scatterer, namely Roland Kovács, who would have originally started in the Grand Prix qualification in Nagyhalász on June 11th. – I confess, I was very happy with the opportunity: Debrecen, it is still Debrecen. SpeedWolf Debrecen is my club, this is my home course, and my main sponsor is happy to start here – Roland Kovács started the conversation, who surprisedly didn’t look at the start list yet.
I’m sure very good racers are coming, but it doesn’t really matter who the rivals are, I just want to focus on myself.
Just like in my European Championship race in May, I want to feel good on the bike. I am confident that my starts will be good, then I have to pull the gas, escape in front of the rivals, said the biker from Hajdúság, who is behind the start line in the first race with three opponents, all of whom are Michael Jepsen Jensen from Denmark. Australian Rohan Tungate and Swedish Tomas H. Jonasson will start in Stage 2.
The other Hungarian representative will be Norbert Magosi, who is also the slacker of SpeedWolf Debrecen.
I am hungry for a race win, unfortunately I don’t know the time when I had such an experience in Debrecen. I know what level rivals represent, and I am aware of my own situation. Nevertheless, I will do my best to keep the fans and I happy at the end of the fight
– said the 47-year-old iron slippers.
An official training session will be held from 10:30 a.m. before the race, which starts at 4 p.m. on Pentecost, and admission is free.

A fight going to a knife hillThe 16-man field is teeming with world-class players, including Grand Prix Grand Prix winners, current and former permanent GPs, European champions, junior world champions and two-time long-distance world champions. The focus is on Australia’s Jack Holder, who is a regular at this year’s Grand Prix series, and not by the way, the brother of world champion Chris Holder. Another interesting family bond can be highlighted by browsing the field, as Erik, the son of the eight-time (!) Long-distance world champion Gerd Riss, who has been admired many times in Debrecen, will also start on Pentecost Monday. Young Riss has already collected two world championship championships in the same discipline where his father was most successful, and now he wants to make a lasting impression on speedway as well. It will be worth paying attention to the Danish Michael Jepsen Jensen, who is well known and liked by the audience in Hajdúság: the former GP grand prize winner and junior world champion is not hiding to come to Hungary for further progress. Representing Sweden, we can see Tomas H. Jonasson, who was also a regular participant in the Grand Prix before. Individual European champion Andzejs Lebedevs is very happy to take part in the civic town, as the Latvian guy is not only a great biker, but also a real showman, not accidentally becoming an audience favorite in the Gas Pipeline street arena. Polish junior world champion Bartosz Smektala and his compatriot Szymon Wozniak in explosive form set a goal for advancement in terms of the GP qualification itself. We’ve already listed seven pilots who have a chance to take the first four places in the challenge, but we shouldn’t forget about the iron slippers who can do the calculations for the big favorites. The Australian Ro Tungate, the Danish Frederik Jakobsen and the Latvian Olegs Mihailovs fall into this category, so the number of applicants for the qualification has already increased to ten. |
