Lyon, an “edible city” | City of Lyon

Giving back all its place to urban agriculture in Lyon
With its 25 hectares of shared and citizen gardens in Lyon and the 3,000 street gardens in Floral Micro-Implantation (MIF), Lyon is a nourishing land where people cultivate wherever possible.
These agricultural activities in the heart of the city are driving forces of ecological transition that reject citizen and solidarity initiatives in favor of food resilience. Vegetable gardens, orchards and urban farms are in this sense places that create links between people but also with the land and the seasons.
The City of Lyon has thus set up the “Edible City” plan to increase the city’s food potential and build a lasting city-countryside relationship.
The “Edible City” plan implemented:
- The planting of one municipal orchard per year and per borough. Already about twenty orchards have been planted. Learn more about urban orchards
- The development of a nurturing landscape (free picking areas, edible groves, vegetable gardens, etc.).
- The creation of a House of Urban Agriculture, a totem place to support project leaders and disseminate good practices.
- The development of two “fertile neighborhoods” in the 8th and 9th arrondissements with the support of Lyon Metropolis and state services.
- The creation of educational urban farms and urban agriculture projects in the city. Find out more about the Croix-Rousse farm
- The support of associations, actresses and actors of urban agriculture in the Lyon area.
