Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister is coming to Moldova, Chisinau has officially announced. The visit will take place on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. The Russian official will discuss with Secretary of State Ruslan Bolbocean, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in Chisinau.
The Republic of Moldova is energy dependent on Russia, where it imports gas. On the other hand, the visit of the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister comes at a tense international time. Ukraine expects another attack from Russia. Ukraine has a long land border with the Republic of Moldova. On the other hand, in the separatist eastern part of the Republic of Moldova, the Russian military is illegally stationed. The Republic of Moldova is a neutral country. Even though the idea of joining NATO has been circulating, several officials in Chisinau have stated in recent months that the Republic of Moldova wants to maintain its neutrality.
