Peaceful tone in the negotiations between Ankara and Yerevan
Moscow – It has been agreed that talks will continue unconditionally with a view to a full settlement of Turkish-Armenian relations.
The special envoys of Turkey and Armenia agreed in Moscow on Friday to hold talks unconditionally in order to fully resolve relations between the two sides, the Turkish foreign ministry said on Friday after the first meeting aimed at normalization.
At the hearing, Turkey was represented by Ambassador Serdar Kilic and Armenia by Vice-President Ruben Rubinyan.
According to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the first conciliation took place in a “positive and constructive atmosphere”. As they wrote, the Special Envoys had an exchange of views on dialogue-based normalization.
The parties will agree on the date and place of the next round of negotiations through diplomatic channels, the ministry added.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu announced in mid-December that Ankara and Yerevan would appoint special envoys in the near future to normalize their relations.
As part of this, Turkish airline Pegasus announced on Thursday that it had launched a charter flight between Istanbul and Yerevan in early February.
Although the two countries signed a peace agreement in 2009 to re-establish relations and open the border, the agreement was never ratified.
Turkey is a determined supporter of Azerbaijan, as it has close historical, ethnic, linguistic and cultural ties between the two, predominantly Muslim countries. Ankara also supported Baku in the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in the fall of 2020 against Yerevan, whom he also considered an occupier.
