Russia lost to Finland in the Channel One Cup, removed the goalkeeper and allowed into an empty net
The adventure of the coaches of the Russian national team brought a holiday to the Finns. Why was the goalkeeper removed?
Sergei Fedorov successfully used this technique at CSKA.
The second stage of the Eurotour – Channel One Cup – has come to an end. The fate of the trophy was decided on the last day, when two contenders – the national teams of Russia and Finland – met in a face-to-face meeting. The winner was to be determined by the percentage of points scored.
The composition of the Russian team, which played the fourth match in five days, as expected, underwent several changes. Ivan Fedotov returned to the gate, Damir Sharipzyanov and Vyacheslav Voinov appeared in defense instead of Alexander Yelesin and Yegor Yakovlev, the attack took place at once six changes, including the absence of Vadim Shipachev, which was announced by Alexey Zhamnov at yesterday’s press conference.
Finland’s head coach Jukka Jalonen also made changes to the squad, some of which were returned to the squad of Harri Sateri and Joonas Kemppainen.
The Russians, who played the first three matches in the USSR uniform of 1956, today changed their appearance and went on the ice in a set, in which Soviet hockey players won two Olympic golds – in 1964 and 1968.
The guests played in their usual style, building a low compact defense on the court. The Finns mostly met our hockey players not earlier than the red line, and the Russians had difficulty not only getting close to the goal, but in general entered the zone. It was impossible to find a gap in such a system. As a result – only four shots on target, of which the most dangerous was on account of Semyon Chistyakov. However, Syateri said “no”, and before the break it was not possible to break it.
The Finns, on the other hand, managed to create a goal out of nothing. Yukka Yalonen’s wards in five seconds went from their gates to the possessions of Ivan Fedotov, where Valtteri Merel, who found himself on a patch, surrounded by two Russian defenders, was able to push the puck over the line, leading the guests forward.
In the second twenty minutes, the rule “if you don’t score, you score for you” worked in the opposite direction. The Finns did not succeed in taking advantage of the last opportunity to take advantage of the majority. All thanks to the incredible dedication of Fedotov, who tried to reflect the pucks flying at him.

In the middle of the period, Gusev’s exit “one to zero” neutralized Syateri, but after three minutes he could no longer help his team. After a discount from the same Gusev, Mikhail Grigorenko snapped with all his might, but his throw did not reach the goal. However, the Finnish goalkeeper did not see how the puck bounced back to Artyom Minulin in transit through Willie Pokka’s legs – he quickly took his bearings and finished it off into the net.

The third period could have started with a quick goal from the Russian national team, but Kirill Marchenko’s throw hit the crossbar, and Andrei Chibisov did not have time to play on the finishing move. And in this case, there was an immediate response from the Finns – Alexander Kadeikin violated the rules of Sakari Manninen’s “Salavat” opponent, and the victim himself realized his numerical advantage, setting the advantage on the scoreboard.
There was plenty of time and opportunities to recoup. The puck even visited Syateri’s goal – after Voinov’s throw, in most cases, it flew into the net with the help of a ricochet. However, the referee immediately showed that the goal would not be counted – in his opinion, Kirill Marchenko created a hindrance to the Finnish goalkeeper. The referees watched the episode for several minutes, after which they decided … to fix the goal!
The goal was, to put it mildly, controversial. However, they were adamant – 2: 2, we continue the game.
The match went into overtime, where the national team decided to repeat the trick from CSKA with the replacement of the goalkeeper for the fourth field player. However, this feint came out sideways for the Russians – Manninen intercepted the puck and fled to an empty net. Voinov tried to knock out a game shell in the fall, but instead knocked the Finn off – even if the puck did not fly into the goal, according to the rules, the goal was still scored. The gamble of the coaches of the Russian national team did not work and gave a holiday to the Finns. The Channel One Cup is going to this country this year.
