The project of Councilor JUDr. Petr Lachnit, to the gathering of war veterans of the Czech Republic on the occasion of honoring the memory of war victims and war veterans at Kinský Square in Prague 5:
Ladies and gentlemen, dear guests,
a veteran is not just a thing of the past.
Every country, every capital city has its own monument to the unknown soldier. On the days of glorious anniversaries, important personalities of politics and social life gather there. Foreign delegations put flowers and wreaths there, music plays.
Each country respects its fallen soldiers, elevates them “in memoriam”, and gives them military funerals.
But what about those who were not “lucky” and even though they fought, they did not fall. Why the society itself does not behave with due respect even to living combat veterans. Is it because they have not fallen that they have less respect, less admiration? The state should be judged above all for the gratitude it has done to those who have done more for it than just fulfilled its duty. I wish I could promise yes. I will do everything to create conditions for Czech war veterans so that they do not belong to scrap metal after the end of the fighting, so that they are not just a reminder of the former bravery or victory.
To be part of this society, a part respected and recognized. After all, their experience and knowledge are not substitutable.
Let us be selfish, let us fully involve them in our present lives, use them to avoid repeating mistakes and to establish the conditions of a better and fairer world.
The team will show them far more respect than laying flowers on the occasion of the anniversary.
