294 protests in 304 days – that will be a record year
There will be particularly frequent demonstrations in the city in 2021. What the new desire to protest means for the police.
Climate, equality, bike, Corona: in 2021, many Zurich residents had a reason to express their opinion on the street. As the city police announced on request, they had recorded 108 demonstrations and 186 rallies, that is, gatherings without parades, by the end of October. In other words: 294 protests in 304 days.
The number of demonstrations thus reached a maximum. And that although the freedom of assembly was severely restricted in the spring due to Corona and the year is not over yet.
The increased corresponds to a long-term trend. A year ago, after an SVP inquiry in the municipal council, the city council evaluated the number and costs of demonstrations for the years 2015 to 2019: During this period, the number of permanent demonstrations increased, from initially 61 to finally the new figures from the city police now show that After a corona-related decrease in 2020 this year, another increase followed.
