The Disentis Monastery and Academia Group are jointly expanding the range of schools. From August 2024, the Swiss Boarding Schools Disentis & Zurich will be offering English language training at the two locations Disentis and Winterthur/Zurich. The joint venture is formed by the Disentis Monastery and the Academia Group. The Disentis Monastery, with its decades of experience as a boarding school, and the Academia Group, one of the largest providers in Switzerland of the English-language Matura, the International A Levels, complement each other perfectly.

In addition to the existing grammar school, the Disentis monastery will be adding an English-language grammar school with internationally recognized qualifications in Disentis and Winterthur/Zurich to its range of schools in cooperation with the Academia Group as of August 2024.

New: English-speaking high school in Disentis

With the additional offer, the Disentis monastery is opening up a new business area. Tom Etter, Rector of the Gymnasium & Internat Kloster Disentis (GKD) and Co-CEO of the new school, explains: “We have noticed that there is great demand from foreign students for the International A Levels or the IB (International Baccalaureate). ». The International A Levels in particular offer a high degree of flexibility in the choice of subjects and are very popular with internationally oriented families thanks to their worldwide recognition. With the Academia Group, the Disentis monastery also has a partner who has been successfully running English-speaking high schools in Basel and Zurich for several years.

Campus Mountain & City

As the only Swiss boarding school, the Swiss Boarding Schools Disentis & Zurich also offers the choice of living either in the mountains or in the city: A second campus is being built in Winterthur, which will offer around 70 young people a home and a school when it is completed. Roman Meier, Co-CEO of the Swiss Boarding Schools Disentis & Zurich says: “True to the school’s motto ‘The choice is yours’, our students can choose between leisure activities in the mountains and urban lifestyle in Winterthur and Zurich or accommodation in the venerable Choose Disentis Monastery and a state-of-the-art new building in Winterthur.»

Swiss baccalaureate remains core business in Disentis

The existing offer of the grammar school & boarding school Kloster Disentis will continue as before. Pupils from the region as well as from all over Switzerland can continue to prepare for the Swiss Matura at the GKD in the future. “The new offer enriches our school community. The young people will benefit from the exchange with the international students,” Etter is convinced.

The two English-language boarding schools will open their doors in Winterthur and Disentis from August 2024.

About the grammar school & boarding school Disentis Monastery

The grammar school and boarding school Kloster Disentis is both a public grammar school in the canton of Graubünden and a private grammar school and has an integrated boarding school. The history goes back to the founding of the Disentis monastery around 1400 years ago.
