Russia offered to store nuclear waste from other countries: Business climate: Economy: Lenta.ru
Russia is ready to store nuclear waste from other countries on its territory. The proposal on the eve of the world conference on climate change, which will begin on October 31, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland, said the secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, reports “TVNZ”…
“Russia is ready to accept it (nuclear fuel – approx. “Lenta.ru”) for storage from other countries, where nuclear generation is recognized as the most important source of energy in the XXI century “
Friday, October 29, became knownthat 20 French containers of reprocessed uranium arrived at the port of Dunkirk for their first delivery to St. Petersburg. The container with containers is expected to arrive in Russia next week. After that, the regenerated uranium will go to the city of Seversk for processing. However, ecologists fear that it will simply remain in storage in Russia, since the reprocessing process generates radioactive waste.
Activists from Greenpeace, France, spoke out against the shipment of regenerated uranium; they held a protest, during which they unfolded the embankment banners “Russia is not a dump”, “Stop radioactive transport” and “Nuclear energy is not green”. They demanded to stop using Siberia as a place for storing hazardous waste, since there they can cause significant harm to the environment.
Later, chemical scientist Vladimir Petrov refutes the opinion that the import of regenerated uranium from France, which is nuclear waste, turns Russia into a kind of dump. “You have to understand that regenerated uranium is by no means a waste – it is a really valuable raw material. Another thing is that few people in the world know how to handle it in a way that is safe and cost effective. Russia has such technologies, ”he said.
