Almost two decades ago, in 2002, the Phoenix Hall was handed over, which was the largest sports hall in the country until the inauguration of the Papp László Budapest Sports Arena. The Debrecen facility soon became a major part of Hungarian sports life, hosting more than 30 world competitions, and hosted an indoor indoor championship in front of most spectators in the history of Hungarian handball (Debrecen VSC – Győr, February 27, 2019, 5600).
It is no wonder that handball has also been the topic of the current renovation, as the hall in Debrecen will be one of the venues of the 2022 Hungarian-Slovak men’s European Championships. The hall, renamed the Phoenix Arena, was ceremoniously handed over a week before the scheduled deadline, on October 20th.
As a host for the first time László Papp, The mayor of Debrecen spoke at the ceremony. The mayor said that the Phoenix Arena is one of the jewels of Debrecen, and although it was in good condition, its modernization has become timely in recent years. Of the cost of the investment, HUF 2.5 billion gross was provided by the government, and HUF 600 million was provided by the Hungarian Handball Association (MKSZ). Among other things, the exterior facade was painted, the interior was given a new color scheme, the interior was covered, the mechanical and IT systems, the interior lighting were modernized, and a camera system was monitored in accordance with international standards, which also monitored the auditorium.

“We dreamed big in two thousand and eighteen that Hungary could finally host a world event in men’s handball – said at the opening Máté Kocsis, President of the Hungarian Handball Association. “We don’t just want to organize a sporting event, our goal is to show foreign visitors the parts of the country we are proud of, and Debrecen is like that.”
The first major race of the revamped Phoenix Arena will be the fast-paced short-track skating World Cup from 18 to 22 November, an important milestone in the Olympic qualifying series. At the end of the handover ceremony, two girls’ teams of the Debrecen Sportcentrum Sportiskola played a match, but the presentation and the garnish evoked the European Championships next January.
