Burgundy. Dijon Customs intercept 99 kg of contraband tobacco (press release)
The Dijon Regional Customs Directorate communicates on two interventions carried out last weekend on the A31 motorway. They enabled Customs officials to get their hands on nearly 100 kg of contraband tobacco.
“On Saturday 9 October, the agents of the Dijon brigade, in dynamic control on the A31, selected a passenger vehicle occupied by an individual of Kosovar nationality residing in France.
The search of the vehicle revealed 60.8 kg of tobacco concealed at the location of the spare wheel and in various storage traps, i.e. 51 kg of roll-your-own tobacco and 8.8 kg of cigarettes. The tobacco had been purchased in Luxembourg and was circulating without an accompanying document.
Sunday, October 10, agents of the Dijon customs brigade checked a car on the A31 with 5 people on board. They discovered 38,225 kg of tobacco in the trunk of the vehicle, in a door and under the driver’s seat. These goods – 5.92 kg of cigarettes, 120 g of cigarillos and 32,185 kg of roll-your-own tobacco – had also been purchased in Luxembourg and were circulating without an accompanying document.
The contraband tobacco seized this weekend by the regional customs office of Burgundy was intended to be returned illegally to the Bisontine and Dijon agglomerations.
The fight against tobacco fraud is a priority for the customs administration, which in 2020 seized more than 284 tonnes of tobacco. “
