Treasures from Cejl: Brno archaeologists have discovered a medieval suburb, take a look
The remarkable discovery of the medieval suburb was revealed by the construction of the Pekárenský dvůr apartment complex, which is backed by the development and investment company Domoplan.
Objects from various historical periods were found on the construction site. They point to the settlement of the area of custom by cultures from the Neolithic to modern times. “The discovery of a Neolithic culture with linear ceramics is rare. In addition to various shapes of painted ceramics, it is also proved by the discovery of an extensive housing estate with the remains of large wheeled houses and the remains of furnaces with pits. The furnace is not so often found, “follows the Brno archaeologist Michal Bučo.
Another rare uncovered piece is an embroidered stone slab with holes. “It is linked to the Eneolithic period. It originally belonged to nomads from the Iberian Peninsula. It was attached to the left forearm to protect the arteries of archers during shooting, “Bučo described.
Archaeologists have also uncovered a well, the remains of a half-earth, the furnace cladding and a small fireplace with wheel holes. These objects refer to the Late Bronze Age. The found cisterns, the cellar with a set of embossed stove tiles and other technological objects are associated with modern settlement.
Rescue archaeological research took place in several stages. He followed the progress of earthworks by others with the construction of the Bakery Court. “The findings are proof that it lived in this place in the past. With the construction of a new modern residential area, we want to restore this location to its original residential function and breathe new life into it,” said Domoplan project manager Pavel Zobač.
