A Salzburg entrepreneur has picked up on the current trend in the trade towards regional products and is now offering organic food for dogs. Meat and vegetables from the region. Small farm slaughterhouses with species-appropriate animal husbandry provide the ingredients for the dog food producer.
What sounds decadent is currently proving to be a worthwhile market niche for dog food producer Stefan Wiederin. The first two- and four-legged regular customers are impressed by the offer of the “Fressbar” in Salzburg-Lehen: From dried beef lung, chicken wing, horse head meat to fish and game, the palette for dogs ranges from daily meals and delicacies.
Dog owner Peter Schindlmayr appreciates that slaughtered animals are completely used here and that their meat comes from the region, the federal state. The origin is also important for dog owner Gerald Hartl, who wants to watch the dog food being produced.
Slaughterhouse waste is sensibly used as dog food
That was also the motivation to found this company, explains producer Wiederin. “We carefully selected our partners. Does the meat come from regional and species-appropriate animal husbandry? We came on site and took a look at the companies. It is important to us how the farmer treats the animal, ”says Wiederin, who processes meat that is usually thrown away into dog food.
“To the best of my knowledge, that would otherwise end up in animal carcass recycling. There is a lot of waste that unfortunately remains. We don’t want that. We don’t want an animal to die especially for the dog, ”says Wiederin.
300 kilograms of dog food produced weekly
“We have just had the routine check-up at the vet and he said the values are unbelievable,” says customer Schindlmayr.
“I can tell by the dog’s smell. It smells different and doesn’t have the typical dog smell, it doesn’t ‘dog’ like that, ”says customer Hartl. Every week, around 300 kilograms of meat, offal, fish and vegetables are processed into dog food in Salzburg-Lehen.
