Greece-France agreement: Military assistance in depictions – Weapons that change balances
A French “shield” in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean is set up by Athens and Paris, with the defense agreement that the two sides are expected to sign on Tuesday but also with the increase of the Greek fleet with state-of-the-art French warships.
The new equipment, combined with Rafale fighters and upgraded F-16s, would be a unified optical system at sea and in the air, creating a new balance in the Aegean. These are weapons that Ankara does not have and will not acquire, due to the clauses in the agreements signed with France.
French military assistance to Greece in case of threats and provocations
The most basic aspect of the agreement is the Doctrine of Defense Assistance, according to which if one of the two countries is portrayed as provocative, then the other country will provide military assistance. In other words, in the event of a heated incident with Turkey, France may deploy military forces, planes, ships, an army to defend the sovereign rights of Greece.
The Doctrine of Defense Assistance has political and diplomatic implications and sets up a wall of deterrence against Turkish provocation.
The agreement between Greece and France in the field of armaments
According to the SKAI report, with the agreement between Greece and France and the “package” of 5 billion euros, our country will receive 3 FDI Belharra frigates while there is a right to choose another frigate – if Athens wishes, and 3 corvettes Gowind plus one if Athens wants it.
Greece also upgrades the 4 MEKO and ensures any upgrades that occur in the future.
The schedule predicts that in 2025 the first two Greek FDI Belharra frigates will be ready, as well as the first Gowind corvette. A year later, in 2026, the next frigate and the other two corvettes are expected to be delivered. Every year from 2023 a ready MEKO will be delivered.
SKAI information states that the Gowind corvettes are smaller in size, but have twice the combat power of the MEKO frigates that it currently has in the arsenal of Greece.
The state-of-the-art equipment
These ships are equipped with the most modern systems that will change the balance in the Aegean.
In particular, the FDI Belharra frigates have Sea Fire radar with a range of 200 km around the ship. Also ASTER 30 anti-aircraft missiles, powerful EXOCET surface-to-air missiles and top CAPTAS 4 and KINGKLIP anti-submarine sonar. These sonar can detect submarines of very modern technology like those that Greece has and that seeks to acquire Turkey in a few months.
