Squirrel paralyzes S-Bahn traffic in Hanover
An S-Bahn train has broken down near the Maschsee after damage to the overhead line. The fire brigade was on duty.

Hanover. After catenary damage, there were massive delays in S-Bahn traffic around Hanover on Thursday. The S5 line from Hanover Airport in the direction of Hameln was particularly affected, as were the S1 and S2 lines. Some trains were delayed by up to 57 minutes.

The damage to the overhead line also alerted the Hanover fire brigade: Because a train came to a standstill on the S-Bahn line near the Maschsee in Hanover, the firefighters had to help with the evacuation. 21 passengers were affected.

From the Fischerhof train station, an Erixx railcar with firefighters, who happened to be waiting, drove towards the broken-down train so that the emergency services could help the passengers change to the replacement train. By 11:25 a.m., all passengers were safe and the operation was over.

According to the federal police, a squirrel had climbed onto the overhead power line (10,000 volts) in the area of the Panner-Schuser-Weg S-Bahn bridge and had been electrocuted there. The catenary tore off and fell onto the S-Bahn that was just passing through.

At the same time, a freight train was running on the opposite track, hit the torn overhead line and tore it down over a length of 500 meters. The railway line then had to be completely closed.
The repair of the overhead line continued on Thursday afternoon, there are still delays.
