At the end of last year, the results of an international architectural competition for the new Dvorecký Bridge in Prague, which will connect Smíchov with Podolí, were announced. The winning design was a neo-cubist bridge from a pair of studios Tubes and Atelier 6. The commission that selected the winning design appreciated the tradition of arch bridges without a structure over the bridge deck and the reaction of the bridge to nearby cubist buildings.
“The Dvorecký bridge will create an important tangential connection – it will connect the banks of the Vltava between the Zlíchov and Podolsk embankments, connect Smíchov and Pankrác. The aim of its construction is to improve the city’s transport connections on both banks of the Vltava in the southern part of the capital city of Prague. Its significant benefit will also be the connection of bicycle paths, which are run on both banks, ie as a replacement for the problematic connection across the Barrandov Bridge, “says the capital city of Prague, which chose from the seven proposals in the final.
“I was a member of the evaluation committee myself, so I can say that the selection was not easy at all. Very good proposals came together, but I think we managed to make a good choice. Out of seven designs, we evaluated the best, most developed studios, Tubes and Atelier 6, which strives to respect traditional Prague arch bridges and cubist elements in the area. I believe that it will not only relieve traffic, but will also enrich Prague’s architecture, “said the then mayor of Prague. m Prague Adriana Krnáčová. The bridge is to cost about one billion crowns. The design included not only a bridge, but also a new tram and bus stop.
