Hanover. Surprise visit – the former exchange student from Mexico is at the door. We are very happy, the clumsy teenager has become a fairly grown-up young man. At the end of February he accepts a job offer in New Zealand, he grew up in Mexico’s second largest city, the metropolitan region of Guadalajara has around five million inhabitants. A cosmopolitan. For his second trip to Germany, he first traveled to Saarland, then to Hanover, including the nation’s hotspots.

But if someone dismisses the state capital as a province, then the Mexican is screwed. He learned to love Hanover for around six months before a nasty virus thwarted quite a few plans. But he hasn’t forgotten Hanover. Together we remember school, basketball, a high consumption of meat and chips and a city tour in a double-decker bus. i am winter But for him in Hanover it feels like winter all year round.
He proudly shows us his many tattoos. He has the year of his mother’s birth immortalized around his neck – it’s unthinkable that we could put our children on the pelts like that. The siblings are also present, as well as a large sundial, various lettering and a complex compass on the calf with a French subtext. Our Mexican can’t speak French.
But the best comes at the end. His eyes flicker as he slowly pushes up the sleeve of his shirt. An imposing building, somehow Art Nouveau and not too small. The exchange student looks at us expectantly – and we understand: It’s Hanover’s town hall. The complete one, on the right forearm. We are touched. That gets under your skin. We rarely experience so much love for our city. And honestly, who needs the Statue of Liberty when you can have Hanover City Hall.
