He is testing a practical invention on the street in a Budapest district
A dog urinal is being tested in Józsefváros, in the recently renovated Déri Miksa Street. For now, a piece of it has been put out. The Czech invention was established on the advice of the ZöldEb Dog Protection Association, with the help of which they would protect the vegetation of the park and the cleanliness of the street, writes the welovebudapest.hu.
The invention is based on dogs’ territorial marking instinct, as dominant males and bitches mark their territory with urine. If they smell a scent pattern left by another dog, they are over-marked, like this
they basically always pee in the same place.
An object ten centimeters high is enough for this.
This characteristic behavior is exploited by the new invention: it is a hollow column made of a special material, which keeps most of the urine inside and only releases an odor that is perceptible to dogs.
The wooden structure costs HUF 20,000, while the concrete structure designed for greater load costs HUF 120,000. This amount is significantly cheaper than the price of cleaning or plant replacement, even if an area as large as Déri Miksa utca requires much more than one piece. The invention is already offered in several cities in the Czech Republic, and is being tested in Poland and Canada, similar to Józsefváros.
András Piko, the mayor of the district wrote in his Facebook post that several districts are planning to test the dog urinal, not independent of the nagging of civilians working for civilized food.
“If we don’t want the symbol of the capital to be a dog pee stain dripping from the base of the wall onto the sidewalk, then we need such smart inventions. Because cleaning capacity cannot cope with this environmental damage – not only in Józsefváros, not anywhere,” he said.
