Petr Pavel spoke on the phone with the President of Taiwan. Beijing has already contacted Prague about this
Taiwan President Taiwan on Monday with the president-elect Petr Pavlo of the Czech Republic. With reference to the president’s office, the Reuters agency reported on this, which described the phone call as a diplomatic breakthrough. China’s Foreign Ministry previously said it was in contact with Prague about the upcoming call.
According to the Taiwanese president’s office, the call lasted about a quarter of an hour. Cchaj adds a wish to stay in touch with Pavel.
According to Reuters, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Pavel said during the election campaign that the principle of one of China must be respected. “The Chinese side is currently trying to verify this with the Czech side, I hope that the Czech side strictly adheres to the principle of one China,” said the Foreign Ministry in Beijing.
China considers Taiwan to be its province, and the people of most countries do not officially meet with its top representatives in an effort not to provoke Beijing. Reuters previously reported that Pavel’s phone call with Cai Jing-wen is an unusual and brilliant move by Taiwan, which will anger China, given the lack of official relations between Prague and Taipei.
Like most countries in the world, the Czech Republic adheres to the one-China policy and officially recognizes only mainland China. Nevertheless, the Czech government declares an interest in cooperation with Taiwan due to its democratic establishment.
Today I spoke with the President of Taiwan, Cai Jing-wen. I thanked her for her congratulations and confirmed that Taiwan and the Czech Republic share the values โโof freedom, democracy and human rights and that we will further strengthen our partnership.
