“We can confirm that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has contacted our colleagues from the embassy in Beijing by phone. The Chinese side expresses concern over the media information about the upcoming phone call between the president-elect and the Taiwanese president,” wrote Czech diplomacy spokeswoman Mariana Wernerová.
China considers Taiwan to be its province, and the people of most countries do not officially meet with its top representatives in an effort not to provoke Beijing.
Reuters points out that Pavel’s phone call with Cai Jing-wen is, given the lack of official relations between Prague and Taipei, something unusual and a brilliant move on the part of Taiwan, which will anger China.
Like most countries in the world, the Czech Republic adheres to the one-China policy and officially recognizes only mainland China. Nevertheless, the Czech government declares an interest in cooperation with Taiwan due to its democratic establishment.
