A tram in Brno dragged a four-year-old boy tens of meters
The accident happened the year before last at the end of the summer holidays. Hoch and his mother got off the tram at a stop not far from Brno’s Main Railway Station. “The defendant did not behave respectfully as a tram driver, he did not devote himself fully to driving the vehicle and left the stop without sufficiently checking the situation around the vehicle,” the public prosecutor stated.
The boy remained huddled in the middle door of the other car. The tram dragged him 43 meters along the ground, resulting in a bruised abdomen and abrasions on his hands. They spent three days in the hospital, after the terrifying experience, he developed post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the expert, she suffers from anxiety during changes and unknown situations, has a phobia of trams and trains, and she will probably carry these fears with her for a long time.
The boy’s mother, who tried in vain to free her son from the grip of the door, experienced an acute stress reaction that turned into an anxiety neurosis.

The tram driver claimed before the court that he did not see anything and that the door signaling would have shown that they were all properly closed. “As I drove off, someone started shouting for me to stop. So I stopped and went out. The lady there said I was dragging a child. I said that it was not possible, that the door signaling was fine,” the man said in front of the court.
“There was a lady in the crowd with a baby on her lap, I asked if she was okay, she nodded yes. Other people were shouting at me there,” complained the driver.
“When I looked in the mirror before leaving, there was a lady standing there and I couldn’t see the child over her, it was somewhere on the ground. In my opinion, the mother was still over the lady and only got out when the door was closing. I can’t explain it otherwise,” mused the driver.
Multiple accident
During his testimony, the man repeatedly referred to the fact that the door signal showed that it was closed. Even the report of the Brno Transport Company claimed that the doors were in order. Even the judge shook his head at that. “It’s the umpteenth accident we’ve dealt with here, sticks and hands of pensioners remain in the door,” the judge recalled.
“The boy was hanging from the door, his hands on the ground. When the tram started, he rubbed his hands and chest on the ground. People ran after the tram, decided to stop it. When the driver came, he asked if everything was okay, he acted on me as if nothing had happened,” testified one of the witnesses of the event.
Because the defense also requested personal questioning of other witnesses, including the boy’s mother, the court had to postpone the hearing. After further hearings, the verdict should be pronounced.
