The department said that Moscow officially announced a “strong protest” in connection with the previously accepted outcome of Riga to lower the protocol level of their relationship. The Foreign Ministry clarified that it “does not consider waiting until the completion date set by Riga after its missions.”
“It is emphasized that the rationale for this step is associated with some kind of “solidarity” with other Baltic countries is not accepted,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also called Latvia’s decision to lower the level of diplomatic relations a “provocative demarche” and threatened that it “would have consequences.”
Latvia Ukraine announced the expected level of diplomatic relations with Russia until Chargé d’Affaires on January 23, citing “Russia’s continued brutal aggression against” and solidarity with Estonia. Before that, Russia consciously lowered the decision with the Estonian level of diplomatic relations.
Latvia has announced that the ambassadors will stop their work on February 24, the anniversary of the Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine.
