Crowded trams due to the closed subway at Jiřák: The transport company will strengthen connections
Due to the replacement of the escalators, it has been closed since January 14th Prague metro station A Jiřího z Poděbro closed for ten monthsd. Trains now only pass through the stations. They will also be closed during the lockout subways and vestibule of the station. In addition to replacing the escalators, the company is building elevators for disabled access in the station. When the station is closed, the company will remove water leaks, repair false ceilings, and also replace damaged stone tiles and lighting on the platform and in places leading to escalators.
But due to the closed metro station, which normally transports thousands of Prague citizens every day, it is logical increased traffic on the tram lines. There are two trams, 11 and 13, going directly to Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrady, a little higher up, in Korunní Street, then tram number 10 and 16, but they serve a slightly different area. In addition, the tram island directly on Jiřák is not built for such surges, it is only a narrow lane around which cars also drive. During peak hours, there are also a large number of children who go to the nearby primary school.
And the situation is also felt by the residents of the Troika. “So after they don’t use the metro at Jiřák, the situation in the tram at around 8 am is pretty terrible. One car of tram no. 13 cannot make it, and the island on Jiřák towards the Museum is quite dangerous, You almost can’t even fit in a tram, especially one carrying schoolchildrenand the island would like to be guarded from driving cars before someone falls there,” Zdeňka K wrote on the Prague 3 social network.
More frequent connections instead of two wagons
However, Prague 3 noticed the overcrowded trams and the impending danger very quickly. One solution could be that instead of one car, line number 13 would run with two standard cars. However, according to the transport company, this is not possible. “The town hall is dealing with the situation with the Transport Company. Unfortunately, according to information from the DPP, it is not possible to simply deploy sets with two cars on line 13, because they would not fit into the Vozovna Žižkov turning point,” explained Deputy Mayor of Prague 3 Ondřej Rut (Greens).
However, the municipality agreed with the transport company to strengthen the lines in the busiest times. This will partially solve the overcrowded trams and also increase security on the island.
“As a result of the Jiřího z Poděbrady metro station, we register overcrowded trams on Vinohradská. I would like to thank the Transport Company of the Capital City of Prague for the measures taken: From Monday 30 January they will be on peak weekdays (7:00am to 8:30am and 3:30pm to 5:00pm) added new connections of line 11 in the Zvonařka – Jiřího z Poděbrady – Olšanské hřbitovy section,” informed Rut.
