The Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen (DE GYTK) offers an undivided, five-year pharmacy education, where the entrance requirement is a high school diploma in biology and chemistry or physics. From the 2023/2024 academic year, the minimum score will change from 380 to 320.
The dean of the GYTK said: they are looking for applications from high school students who are interested in natural science and science, who feel responsible for their fellow human beings, who help others, and for a professional practice whose focus is on providing health advice and assistance to sick people. In practice, this can be realized with the help of the faculty in public pharmacies, hospitals, and in the areas of drug development and production.
– In order to help applicants, we have launched an online preparation tool, in which our colleagues specifically focus on solving problematic tasks that occur during admissions. The classes are free for high school students, all you have to do is register – explained Miklós Vecsernyés.
Every year, more than 350 people apply to the Faculty of Pharmacy in Debrecen, the number of people admitted has varied between 65 and 78 in recent years. The majority of students start their studies with a state scholarship.
Industrial processes, professional practice
Miklós Vecsernyés should also mention that every department of the GYTK has well-equipped research and student laboratories, among which is the medium-sized laboratory of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, which allows students to learn about pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The development is continuous, this year the construction of the faculty’s new building will begin, to which a production unit will be connected.
Students can get involved in the Scientific Student Circle work, which in many cases continues with PhD work after graduation. DE GYTK is staffed by many lecturers who once studied there, thus providing a supply of lecturers and researchers. Their research results are regularly published in international journals.
The faculty has a close relationship with TEVA Gyógyszergyár Zrt, a department located in the company’s factory in Debrecen operates, and they also cooperate in the teaching of several subjects.
– Our students are welcome for longer or shorter internships at any pharmaceutical industry. The mandatory internship can also be completed in a public or clinical pharmacy, explained Miklós Vecsernyés.
The dean of DE GYTK emphasized: the profession of pharmacist is very diverse and wide-ranging. With a pharmacy degree, you can find a job in public pharmacies or hospitals, where as a clinical pharmacist you can simply do the work of doctors, prepare unique infusions or participate in experiments.
– Pharmacists in industry can get involved in all stages of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, deal with drug registration, quality assurance, research and development, participate in production processes, and can also act as drug informants in marketing. In addition to all this, universities and other non-pharmaceutical companies dealing with research and development and analytics also welcome those with a pharmacy degree. In other words, every student who graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen can get a job – added Miklós Vecsernyés.
