The city of Zurich controlled alcohol sales to young people
As the city of Zurich reports, it checked the ban on the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors during test purchases.
In 2022, a total of 170 test purchases were made in the city to ensure compliance with youth protection laws.
In 52 cases, alcoholic beverages or tobacco products were sold even though the young test buyers were under the required age.
This corresponds to a sales quota of almost 31 percent, which represents a significant improvement over the previous year (almost 50 percent). The better results are pleasing stretcher and tobacco.
At the 77th stretcher-Test purchases were illegally sold in 23 percent of the cases, with the 55 tobacco test purchases it was 16 percent. It is still worrying how often “hard” alcohol was sold to 16 or 17-year-olds (66 percent).
Unannounced test purchases since 2005
Test purchases have been carried out since 2005 in cooperation with the Addiction Prevention Office, the Blue Cross and the Zurich City Police.
Young people under the age of 16 try to do this stretcher or tobacco, or purchase spirits for those under the age of 18.
Young people are obliged to answer questions about their age truthfully and ask for their ID to be shown.
Sellers who sell alcohol or tobacco to young people are made aware of the misconduct by the police immediately after the test purchase, are questioned and the report to the city judge’s office is opened.
From a warning to a temporary sales ban
Administrative measures are taken against the responsible patent holders, which can range from a warning to a limited sales ban or even the withdrawal of the patent.
In addition to controls and penalties, the municipal authorities continue to rely on the sensitization of the sales staff by the patent holders and support them with various training opportunities and aids for age determination.
Unannounced test purchases will also be carried out again in 2023.
