Bad luck for millions. A jewelry thief from an apartment in Prague revealed a cup with a straw
The pair of suspects went to the apartment in Italská Street in Prague’s Vinohrady on the afternoon of October 18 last year. Police spokesman Jan Rybanský informed about the case on Wednesday.
The thieves found a number of valuables inside, a thousand euros, but mainly a safe hiding jewelry worth several million crowns. The police did not specify whether they went for sure or whether it was a combination of circumstances that they found such a “treasure” inside.
“The men then put all the things, including a small safe, into bags and left the apartment together. They then divided the loot at the agreed place,” the spokesman described.
During the investigation, criminal investigators worked with a camera recording from the hallway of the house, on which the suspects could be seen, but the video was not of sufficient quality to clearly identify him.

“However, the police did not miss one important little thing that one of the suspects was holding in his hand, and it was believed that he might have bought it somewhere around the scene of the crime. This was indeed confirmed by the investigation, and the criminal investigators obtained video footage from the establishment where the men had refreshments before the crime,” said Rybanský, referring to the fact that the man in the footage is holding a cup with a straw in his hand.
Detectives did not say what kind of business it was. Thanks to other footage, they already knew who it was, because the suspect had been convicted in the past. When they went to get him on October 24th, coincidentally he also had a court appearance that day in another case.
“During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime and subsequently handed over the jewelry that was hidden at his girlfriend’s house. The police tracked down the second suspect the same day in the evening on Wenceslas Square with parts of the stolen jewelry. He was also wanted nationwide. He confessed to the theft at the police station and subsequently handed over the rest of the stolen loot he had at home to the police,” the spokesman explained.
Investigators are still searching for the pair that manufactures jewelry for more than 2,300,000 crowns and others. They accused both suspects of theft and trespassing, for which they face up to eight years in prison, depending on the amount of damage.
