Concern in the Republic of Moldova: “The prospects are gloomy”
The Republic of Moldova is on the war maps of the Russian Federation, and the risks are high as long as the war continues in Ukraine, according to Moldovan analysts consulted by Radio Chisinau on Monday.
The incident two days ago, when fragments of a new rocket fell on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, should represent another alarm signal, and the Chisinau authorities must start actions to prepare the population for exceptional situations, including a possible one. escalation of the war, according to analysts.
The fall of rocket fragments on the territory of the Republic of Moldova is no longer a singular incident, but a constant danger, for the former Minister of Defense, Vitalie Marinuţă. The authorities should initiate actions to prepare both the economy, the military and the military reserve, as well as civilians, in case of an escalation of the conflict in the neighboring country.
“We have been on alert for practically a year. Personally, however, I don’t really see that he has done much in terms of mobilizing and training the population, in preparing the population to take action in an exceptional situation. So, this missile (discovered on Saturday near the town of Larga, northern Moldova) was a wake-up call that still does not require us to wake up and do something to prepare. So that, in case of necessity, we can retaliate as Ukraine does,” Marinuță told Radio Chișinău.
He also warns that, against the background of the intensification of Russian attacks on Ukrainian towns, the Republic of Moldova continues to be in danger of being the target of missiles with even more serious consequences.
A similar opinion is shared by the security expert Ion Leahu, who says, referring to Western analyses, that Russia still has a great capacity for war.
“Russia, having a huge economy, until recently having colossal revenues from the sale of crude oil and carcasses, will be able to afford a war economy before long, an economy that produces missiles, projectiles and tanks,” says Leahu. “In the given situation, obviously, if Ukraine manages to resist, then we resist too. But if Russia defeats Ukraine, our prospects are pretty bleak,” he sounds the alarm.
Ion Leahu referred, among other things, to the statements recently made by Andrei Ilarionov, former advisor to Vladimir Putin during his first presidential term. Ilarionov penciled in a possible scenario in which the Russian army could attack the Ukrainian Bugheak and create a corridor with the strongly pro-Russian Gagauzia and the Transnistrian region.
Although this scenario does not seem easy to put into practice, a preparation can be observed at least from an ideological point of view in the Gagauz region, commented Leahu, former representative of Chisinau in the Unified Control Commission, a joint military command structure made up of envoys of . The Republic of Moldova, Transnistria and Russia, which operate in the ‘buffer zone’ on the border between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
“I wouldn’t pay too much attention to such perspectives, but at the same time, look at the recent statements of Mrs. Vlah (Irina, the governor of Gagauzia). How much hatred and contempt for the president (Maia Sandu) and the leadership of the Republic of Moldova! It’s an absolutely obvious sign that someone is heating up the situation. At least at the ideological level, such preparations are being made, and it is possible that in the plan in which the fate of the Republic of Moldova is aimed, a role will be assigned to the Gagauz and Transnistrians”, said Leahu.
On Saturday, near the border town of Larga, Briceni district, the authorities discovered fragments with about 80 kilograms of explosives of a missile from the Russian airstrikes on Ukraine. The explosive was later detonated by soldiers of the Moldovan army.
Last October and November, Russian rockets flew over the territory of the Republic of Moldova, and their fragments also fell on its territory, destroying the roofs and windows of several houses in the town of Naslavcea (north). The Russian bombardments on Ukraine have left the communities in the Republic of Moldova without power on several occasions, recalls the quoted radio station.
