Election error in Bystrec: people gave more votes to candidates than there were envelopes
Unreal at first glance: more than one hundred percent of valid votes. This information was offered by the precinct in Brno’s Bystrec after the end of the first round of the presidential elections. The figure of 101.75 percent of valid votes even arrived in the electoral system at the Czech Statistical Office.

Although 515 envelopes were to be handed in at the Heyrovského Elementary School in Bystrica, there were actually 524 valid votes. That’s nine votes more than envelopes submitted. “It was evaluated as an error, and it is logged,” confirmed Jan Cieslar, spokesperson of the Czech Statistical Office, to Deník.

According to him, if someone filed a petition with the court and recognized it as justified, the court would have to start dealing with it. “Electoral materials are stored and sealed at the given municipal office only after the end of the elections. They must not be shredded until then,” explained the spokesperson, adding that this is precisely because of a possible judicial review. At the same time, this year’s similar case from Děčín came close, where several more votes than the issued envelopes got into the ballot box. They could have gotten there, for example, by accidentally sticking another ballot to the envelope or gluing the tickets together.
The newspaper also contacted the Brno municipality with the findings. “We are dealing with this information,” confirmed the municipality’s spokesman Filip Poňuchálek.
