He played at the World Cup in Qatar, now he is heading to Letná. Sparta won the representative of Australia
Sparta footballers were strengthened by the Australian national team midfielder Awer Mabil. Participant of this year’s World Cup in Qatar will host Letná from Cádiz, Spain, part of the agreement is an option. The 27-year-old midfielder became Prague’s fourth winter signing.
Mabil will be reunited with Sparta’s Danish coach Brian Prisk, who previously managed him at Midtjylland. The native of Kenya also worked in Adelaide, Esbjerg, Pacos Ferreira, Kaimpas and most recently in Cádiz. He played in the Champions League for Midtjylland.
Mabil made 31 appearances for Australia’s national A-team and scored eight goals. At the last world championship, where the team reached the round of 16, he scored two starts in the group as a substitute player.
“I played my best football under coach Prisk. I know myself really well. It’s like playing a boy, so we have these ambitions in common. And it will be our goal to prove it here,” he told the Spartan website Mobile.
“I want to fight for titles. So the main motivation why I came here is to win, fight for the title and also play European cups again. I played the Champions League with my former team in Denmark. It was a great feeling and I would really like to experience it again And that’s my goal here,” he added.
The Leten people expect a lot from Mabil. “Awer is an offensive winger, a hard-working player who can pass sports experience in a one-on-one duel. He has experience from international matches that the team played both in the national team of Australia and in UEFA competitions,” said Spartans director Tomáš Rosický. “He is a team player with a winning mentality. The advantage is that the coach knows him well from working together in Midtjylland,” he added.
Sparta had already acquired three other foreign winter reinforcements before Mabil. After the fall, the third team of the first league table engaged Finn Kaan Kairinen, another midfielder Qazim Laci from Albania, and the back row was reinforced by Serbian defender Dimitrije Kamenovič.
