A double farewell after twenty years. South Moravian rescue workers retired
“We put a piece of our life, a piece of our heart into the work. I think I did a good job for the paramedics, that I didn’t tempt it,” said Jana Knirschová, a former paramedic of the South Moravian Region’s medical rescue service, before retiring. After twenty-eight years, at the turn of the year, she left the Tišnov base. Along with her, the ambulance driver Karel Kuba also finished his 22-year life-saving practice.

Both colleagues agreed that during that time the emergency service has undergone several changes. The rescue worker saw progress mainly in expertise, equipment or methods used. On the other hand, in the case of patient care, she perceived it the other way around. “When it comes to patients, I feel that there is a bad trend. People used to be able to help themselves with less serious problems. That’s not the case now. They are not independent, they often cannot handle the smallest problems,” said Knirschová.
Karel Kuba was concerned with the development of rescue vehicles. “When you’re riding a twelve-hundred three or the latest sprinter, it’s a really big difference. Expertise is also on a completely different level. My dad died of a heart attack at the age of sixty-eight. If his heart had failed nowadays, he’d probably still be here. But what I really like, and of course I like it as a driver, is the traffic. Some drivers are inexperienced and drive like crazy. Then they are dangerous,” explained the former ambulance driver.

Former employees of the South Moravian Rescue Service also stated that they were looking forward to more free time. Knirschová wants to travel and work in the garden, while Kuba thinks first of all about her family. “I read somewhere that you spend a third of your life sleeping, a third at work, and the last third is left for other things. So I mainly want to be with my family, I will already have two-thirds of my time for them,” added Kuba.
The couple wished their colleagues farewell, that the work was fun and fulfilling. “Be positive, everything goes better then, I’ve tried it,” Knirschová ended the conversation.
