This is the stand in Hanover and Bremen
The city of Hanover would like to indicate Tempo 30 on selected main roads. However, this is not legally possible, a spokeswoman for the city told the German Press Agency. The city is therefore active as a founding member of the “Liveable Cities” alliance and is calling on the federal government to change the legal framework and give the municipalities more leeway on these issues.
In the city of Hanover, 30 km/h zones were set up many years ago wherever permitted, the spokeswoman said. New residential areas are automatically identified as 30 km/h zones when they are handed over to public transport.
The city has had good experiences with 30 km/h zones, according to the spokeswoman. The majority of drivers keep to the prescribed speed or only slightly exceed it. Measurements proved that. However, there are always complaints about 30 km/h: Mainly on long, straight roads with few junctions and intersections and on roads with very wide lanes.
In the city of Bremen, there is a speed limit of 30 km/h on side streets almost everywhere, says a spokeswoman for the Bremen transport department. On main roads, Tempo 30 is mainly ordered for kindergartens, schools and social facilities – in individual cases also in other places for reasons of traffic safety and noise protection. However, a speed of 50 still prevails on main roads.
The Bremen traffic department announced that the introduction of Tempo 30 on various main roads would be examined in 2023 for reasons of noise protection.
