Canton Zurich
The Zurich cantonal police responded to several small and large events on the night of New Year’s Day (1 January 2023). There have been numerous reports of fireworks being set off improperly. Shortly after 7:30 p.m., fires in properties were reported in Dübendorf and Männedorf. The first fire brigades were able to extinguish the fire. A total of around two dozen people had to be evacuated. The material damage caused is estimated at several hundred thousand francs. In both cases, the cause of the fire is still unclear and is being investigated by the fire investigation service of the Zurich cantonal police.
During the night, around two dozen more reports of smaller fires were received in the canton of Zurich. These could be deleted fastest by the notification fire brigades or earlier by private individuals. The Zurich police had to move out more than 50 times because fireworks were let off against facades or directed means of transport or in mailboxes.
Shortly after midnight, a light person was shot at with a firecracker in Oetwil am See. Clashes broke out in various places in the canton, with a few people being slightly injured. The Zurich cantonal police have started the investigation.
Zurich main station
Because of the large number of people expected in downtown Zurich, the Zurich cantonal police were on duty at Zurich main station with an increased number, supported by forces from the SBB transport police, Securitas and Tanssicura. Shortly before 1 a.m., a 22-year-old man was injured in the face and hand by three unknown persons with a stabbing weapon. The three alleged perpetrators between the ages of 16 and 21 from Ghana and Switzerland were arrested. A further eight people have been arrested for violations of the Aliens and Integration Act, theft, outstanding fines and violence and threats against officials. In addition, numerous fireworks were seized and eight people were expelled because they were drunk or because they molested other people.
Various partner organizations such as fire brigades, rescue services and local police were deployed together with the Zurich cantonal police.
