Former cyclist and Olympian František Jursa has died
Former Olympic cycling representative František Jursa died in Brno on Wednesday, December 28 at the age of 89.

The Brno-based Dukla rider competed at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. At that time, as a Benjamin, the Czechoslovak quartet started the pursuit race in the team, which lost in the quarter-finals to eventual winners Italy. Jursa was supposed to start in the road race as well, but the bikes, which were sent to Australia by ship half a year before the Olympics, were not to be found in the ports.
In their careers, they won national championship titles on road, track and cyclocross. He won his first championship title on the road at the age of 19, when he defeated the phenomenal Jan Veselý. He also started in the Peace Race in 1961.

After ending his active career, Jursa became a coach at the army center in Brno. He had a big share in the success of his charges not only in the republic, but also on the international forum, where the riders Dukla Smolík, Moravec, Doležel, Vávra and others were promoting themselves. He lived with sports until his last moments. He also worked on the committee of the Club of Czech Olympians in Brno.

The last farewell to František Jursa took place on Wednesday, January 4, at quarter past three in the afternoon at the Brno crematorium.
