The architectural plans of József Borsos in Debrecen become public property
From the first of January, the plans of the former chief architect of Debrecen for the public cemetery in Debrecen, the police headquarters and the Ary villa will become freely available.
The writings of Ferenc Molnár, Béla Kempelen, Gyula Szász, Paul Éluard, Knut Hamsun, Mariano Azuela, Waldemar Bonsels, the paintings of Géza Kende, the musical works of Gusztáv Szerémi, as well as the independent architectural designs of József Borsos and Emil Vidor will become freely available in Hungary on January 1, 2023. – the National Intellectual Property Office (SZTNH) told MTI on Wednesday.

When a work is created, it is protected by copyright, which lasts for 70 years after the author’s death. From January 1, 2023, the writings of Ferenc Molnár, who died in 1952, among others, will become public property in Hungary, for example his novels The Pál Street Boys and The Hungry City or his stage plays One, Two, Three, Liliom and The Glass Shoe – read in the announcement.
As written, the works of journalist Béla Kempelen researching the Hungarian nobility will also become freely available; Scientific publications of mathematician Gyula Szász; the poems of the French surrealist artist Paul Éluard; some novels by Norwegian Knut Hamsun, the Nobel laureate in literature, and Mariano Azuela from Mexico, as well as the works of the German Waldemar Bonsels, who wrote the children’s book Maja, a mehecske.
It is important, however, that this only applies to the original works, not to their adaptations or adaptations, so for example the film or musical version of The Boys from Pál Street, and indeed the cartoon and comic book entitled Maja, a mehecske, are not yet considered public domain – they remind you of the amount.
According to the information, the paintings of Géza Kende, the musical works of Gusztáv Szerémi, as well as the independent works of several renowned architects will also be freely available from next year: for example

Also the plans of Emil Vidor’s twenty residential buildings in Budapest, including the Palatinus houses, a fine example of Hungarian art nouveau architecture, and the Bedő house.
They also point out that in 2024, individual works by artists such as sociologist László Dienes, painter Lajos Márton, architects Gyula Sándy, László Lauber and Fábián Gáspár, composer Imre Kálmán or jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt will become public property.
Literary, scientific and artistic works are always protected by copyright, as are achievements related to their use. One of the basic aims of these is to stimulate intellectual creativity. The legal protection of author’s works also means the protection of the conditions for the operation and development of the domestic cultural industry, jobs, enterprises, and investments – the announcement is analyzed.
