Hanover. For some it IS the night of the year, consider the evening overrated: New Year’s Eve. We want to get a picture of the mood among our readers: How do you celebrate the turn of the year? After the corona restrictions of the past few years, private fireworks are allowed again this time. The New Year’s Eve classics, which shouldn’t be missing in any year, are shown on television. And of course people look back on 2022 – and make resolutions for 2023.

What do you think of a firecracker ban?
After a two-year ban on firecrackers, private fireworks are allowed again next New Year’s Eve. And with that, a perennial topic in Germany is being discussed again: fireworks ban on New Year’s Eve – yes or no? The colorful play of lights at midnight pollutes the environment: Around 2050 tons of fine dust are released every year when fireworks are set off – around 75 percent of them on New Year’s Eve. “This amount corresponds to almost one percent of the total amount of fine dust released in Germany,” says in A report by the Federal Environment Agency.
In addition to the environmental aspect, the discussion also revolves around the tense situation in the hospitals. The German Hospital Society expects the number of serious injuries to rise again – while the situation in the clinics is already tense due to the current wave of illnesses. This year, the imports of fireworks are well below the pre-corona level. From January to September 2022, around 5,700 tons of fireworks were imported to Germany, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. That was 81 percent less than in the same period of the pre-Corona year 2019, when it was 29,800 tons. Compared to the previous year, the import of fireworks increased again by 2300 tons.
