Application deadline for Frankfurt mayor election has expired
DThis means that the deadline for submitting the application documents for a candidacy in the mayoral election on March 5 of the new year has expired. The election proposals could be submitted up to 6 p.m. on Boxing Day at the office for elections and votes in the citizens’ office, statistics and elections. Now the preliminary check is running there to see whether all applicants have submitted the documents in full. The municipal election committee will then meet on January 6th and will then officially announce which candidates have met the admission requirements. And the committee also determines the order of candidates on the ballot. In the parties that are already represented in the city parliament, they are treated according to the number of their mandates. All other candidates are decided by drawing lots.
If everything was submitted properly, the former Greens councilor should Manuel Rottman be number one on the ballot as the Greens emerged as the strongest force in the 2021 local elections. They are followed by CDU candidate Uwe Becker and Head of Planning Mike Josef, who wants to run for the SPD.
New candidate record could be achieved
How many candidates will there be in the end who will run for the office that will be held after the deselection of Peter Feldman has been vacant since November 12 by the citizens of Frankfurt remains a secret. Stefan Köster, head of the office for elections and voting, does not even provide information on how many submitted their documents.
If you want to believe the talks of the town, a new record could be set. At the last mayoral election in 2018, twelve candidates stood for election, which was also a record in the city’s history. Since 1995, the people of Frankfurt have elected their mayor directly.
Only Germans or EU citizens can become candidates. The person does not have to live in Frankfurt. Those nominated by a political party must submit a record of the nomination meeting. Independent applicants and candidates from parties not represented in the Römer must submit their documents with the signatures of 186 supporters, which is twice the number of mandates that exist in the city parliament.
In addition to the three major parties, the Liberals with parliamentary group leader Yanki Pürsün, the Left with city councilor Daniela Mehler-Würzbach, the Bürger für Frankfurt with parliamentary group leader Mathias Pfeiffer and the AfD with party leader Andreas Lobenstein have also announced their candidacies. In addition, the “lateral thinker” party “Die Basis” will run with the lawyer Frank Grossenbach, for “Die Party” will run, as can be heard, the party leader in the district of Offenbach, Katharina Tanczos, and for the “Team Todenhöfer” of Frankfurt entrepreneurs Khurrem Aktar. Peter Wirth, known as “Bahnbabo”, the entrepreneur Maja Wolff, the chairman of the allotment garden association in Riederwald, Niklas Pauli, and the Chinese-born Feng Xu threw their hats in the ring as independent candidates.
