The temporary bridge over Svratka in Brno works without problems, dozens of trains have crossed
Dozens of trains have already crossed the temporary bridge over the river Svratka in Brno. It started working on Friday night, which was necessary due to the damage to the bridge. Everything is without problems and the trains are running according to the timetables, said Jan Nevola, the spokesperson of the Railway Administration. On the corridor between Brno and Břeclav and also Jihlava, traffic has been limited since Thursday due to damaged pillars and a vault. Reconstruction of the viaduct will require the preparation of project documentation, after which other administrative steps will follow. According to estimates, the temporary facility should serve for two to three years.

The railway workers informed about the violation of the bridge on Thursday. Therefore, they were preparing a temporary bridge that was supposed to be ready this morning. In the end, they were able to finish the work already on Friday evening, thanks to which the lockout could end. “Traffic is standard and there are no restrictions on Jihlava or Břeclav. Dozens of trains passed by,” said Nevola. They just don’t run on as many tracks as usual, but they run according to the timetables.
A reduced speed applies on the temporary bridge. “We will continue to monitor the technical condition of the bridge, but if we were not sure that it was safe, we would not allow traffic there,” said Nevola.
Restrictions for trains in Brno: the bad condition of the bridge complicates the journey to the main station
Railway officials said on Thursday that the reason for the breach of the bridge, according to their findings so far, is the construction of flood control measures. The city’s spokesman, Filip Poňuchálek, said that the sheetrock walls are located two meters from the pillar, have been in place since the summer, and since then no work has caused any tremors. The city is planning a joint meeting with the Railway Administration on remedial options.
All trains will run through the main station over the Christmas holidays as traffic is significantly lighter, as will the weekend of 31st December and 1st January. Between holidays and in the first week of January, only passenger trains between Tišnov and Židlochovice and Hustopeče should run through the nearby lower station between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. It is not yet certain what the organization of transport will look like from January 9.
