Pharmacies in the South Moravian Region are also aware of the lack of medicines. “The situation in South Moravia is the same as in the rest of the Czech Republic. Medicines for children to bring down the temperature, antibiotics, eye drops and ointments are missing,” Stanislav Fránek, a member of the Czech Chamber of Pharmacists and pharmaceutical pharmacy KRAS Jedovnice, told Denik.
According to the St. Anna University Hospital in Brno, the reason is an excessive shortage of children’s antipyretics and analgesics, which pharmacies across the country are facing. The hospital solved the shortage with its own medicine in the form of suppositories. Parents of children can get them at FNUSA pharmacies. I offer suppositories with ibuprofen and paracetamol. “The demand for these drugs during the period with increased incidence of influenza is very high. We therefore decided to start preparing the suppositories ourselves. In this way, we will at least partially cover the shortage of commonly available medicines. We prepare more than a thousand suppositories in this way every day,” said the head of the medicine preparation department of the Faculty Hospital of St. Anna Monika Pecháčková.

According to the head of pharmacy communication, Dr. Max Michal Petrov’s problem of global character. “What is happening now in Moravia is only part of a global problem. This started with covid in the recent past when distribution chains were severely disrupted. The production and supply of active substances and medicines was further affected by the war in Ukraine. The prices of energy and other raw materials are rising. For example, sunflower oil or herbal extracts,” Petrov outlined the situation.
In addition, the spokesperson adds that we will always face shortages of some types of medicine. According to him, however, most pharmacists can recommend the missing substitute. “We are experiencing a current shopping frenzy for some products. Therefore, I want to appeal to everyone to behave sensibly. Think about the patients who really need the medicine,” added Petrov.
According to the Czech Chamber of Pharmacy, Nurofen brand syrup for children will be available for sale again on Thursday at the earliest.
